Illegal immigration describes migration across national borders without
regard to the legal requirements. People who do this are called
"illegal immigrants" or "undocumented immigrants,"
depending on the the speaker's political views. Illegal immigrants
include people who arrive in a legal manner but then outstay their visas
(that is the authorized time in the host country). The term
illegal
immigrant is highly contested and suggests criminal activity on the
part of people who have never been convicted of any border-crossing
crime and are thus legally innocent. The term, however, is commonly
used.
